What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy (OT) is an allied health profession that helps people participate in the activities they find meaningful – whether that’s independent living, work, social events, hobbies, or community participation. 

OT practitioners in Australia must hold a degree qualification and be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

OT takes a whole-person approach, focussing on:

  • Making everyday activities easier and safer
  • What you can and what you want to do
  • Overcoming challenges and limitations 
  • Developing skills for greater independence

I’ve been an OT for about nine years now. I love it because I get to be a part of positive change for my clients. 

Felicity, OT
I’ve been an OT for 5 years. I love working with different clients and the unique challenges each client brings – even though they have the same condition, it may be a completely different circumstance. I love the variety of that, and working with my clients to make an impact in their lives.

I’ve been an OT for just over a year now. What I really enjoy about working at AQA is that we work within a person-centred framework – our clients guide us on how we can best support them.

How can our OT team help?

Our OT team’s skillset and passion is working with people with complex physical disabilities – like SCI and MS. They understand the sector, and their practice is informed by the wealth of lived experience of disability among our staff and community. Areas of support include:
